The shooting took place in a Northside Medical building on West Peachtree Street – a commercial area in Atlanta full of office blocks and apartments.

Police urged those in the area to “secure their building and shelter in place”, and others were asked to stay away from the zone as an investigation is carried out.

Meanwhile, police have released a photo of Patterson, calling for anyone with information to report his location but not to approach him.

Those injured in the shooting were taken to hospital, while the fifth was pronounced dead at the scene.

A reward of up to $10,000 (£8,000) is being offered for information leading to the arrest and charge of the suspect.
