An officer is under investigation after a woman was killed when she was struck by a police car on Christmas Eve.

Rachael Moore died when she was hit by a Merseyside Police car responding to an unrelated emergency call in the Kensington area of Liverpool on 24 December.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) announced on Friday that a police constable has been told they are under criminal investigation..

The driver is also being investigated for potential gross misconduct in relation to the manner of their driving, the IOPC said.

An investigation was launched by the police watchdog into the collision on Sheil Road, which happened just after 8pm, following a mandatory referral from Merseyside Police.

IOPC regional director Catherine Bates said: “Rachael lost her life in the most tragic circumstances just a day before Christmas.

“Our thoughts are with her loved ones and all those affected by her death.”

She said the investigation will look at the circumstances of the collision, “including the actions and decision making of the police driver and whether they were in line with policy and procedure”.

The IOPC said it has been in contact with Ms Moore’s family and “will keep them updated as our inquiries progress”.
